Kerala High Court has ruled that private buses can levy extra charges from the passengers until COVID protocol is in place. Court stayed the government’s order reducing bus charges, for two weeks. The ruling was based on the petition filed by private bus owners. Both private and KSRTC buses can collect extra charges from passengers while ensuring safety precautions including social distance.

This increased fares can be continued till the lockdown is completely lifted. The court also instructed that social distancing should be practised in the buses. The court demanded that the new report on increased bus fares should be submitted within four weeks by the Ramachandran committee.

Kerala Private Bus Operators Forum had approached High Court citing that they are facing huge financial crisis in the current context.

The court has not banned the government order, instead it has issued a temporary stay.

Minister AK Saseendran responded that he would speak on the matter only after accessing the HC order. Private bus owners said that private buses will start plying from the next day as the court’s ruling has come out.
